How often should you test smoke alarms?
Test smoke alarms every month using the test button. Check the manufacturer date, too: the U.S. Fire Administration says to replace the entire smoke alarm after 10 years.
What to do during a monthly check
Use the alarm’s test button and make sure the sound can be heard where people sleep. Follow the alarm manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and testing. If an alarm does not respond, address it immediately rather than disabling it.
Batteries and long-life alarms
For alarms with replaceable 9-volt batteries, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing the battery at least once a year. Hardwired alarms commonly have a backup battery. Do not try to replace the battery in a sealed 10-year alarm; follow its instructions and replace the complete unit when required.
